Aviatur’s Hotel Las Islas in Colombia

With the support of Furukawa Electric LatAm and systems integrator ComWare S.A., the newly opened hotel from the Aviatur Business Group, Las Islas, in Barú, has implemented the highest technology in optical fiber in order to offer a pioneer tourism product both in Colombia and in South America. With over 60 years of history, Aviatur provides cargo business, tourism representations, hotel operations, and administration services for travel insurance agencies.

With the opening of Hotel Las Islas, Aviatur has bet on a project under the concept of ecotourism, in which people have the possibility to enjoy the tropical landscape of Barú and to appreciate the view of the Caribbean Sea and the Rosario and San Bernardo Corals Natural Park. The hotel, which was built in an area of 65 thousand m2, has 55 bungalows (33 at sea level and 22 at treetop level) and capacity to host 120 guests. In addition, it has three restaurants, four bars, one cafeteria, one freshwater water pool, one water sport center, one spa, one gym center and one handicraft shop.

“Since the beginning we had several challenges in terms of design and construction for this hotel in the middle of the tropics. The distribution of the rooms changed many times, which involved adjustments in the technological design. It was not possible to use wireless systems, since the antenna affected the landscape and the hotel style, and we also needed materials that did not suffer damage by the rugged terrain and seawater salinity”, said Didier Morales, Director of Electronic Communications of Aviatur

Furukawa, together with ComWare S.A., implemented in Hotel Las Islas its Laserway solution, which is a solution for technological communication infrastructure. It is based on GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) technology and also follows the ITU-T’s recommendations. The chosen equipment was an ONT (Optical Network Terminal), which converts the optical signal coming through the fiber in separate signals for TV, voice, and data, in order to ensure the connection of different devices to a single computer.
