Hyperconnected Hotels: Technologies that Transform Industry

What does a hotel guest need to be satisfied?

In addition to a comfortable rest, a pleasant shower, and a varied breakfast, the quality of the digital services offered by the hotel establishment has become a determining factor when choosing where to stay.
The current business guest requires a fast internet, HDTV, IPTV, the ability to make video conferences, check out in the room, video streaming, digital temperature control, etc.

Thus, the hotel industry must understand that improving the digital experience will attract and retain more customers.

A survey conducted by TripAdvisor shows that 46% of hotel guests require Wi-Fi, and 11% are willing to pay more for Wi-Fi if it is a high-speed connection. Thus, the delivery of a new customer experience inevitably goes through an excellent communication network. That´s the perfect application for Furukawa to offer more and more flexibility with a compact and efficient structure.

Fiber optics to the room, as if it were at home

The Furukawa Laserway Solution is based on passive optical elements that can transfer data through light pulses over great distances, without the need for electricity (thus avoiding problems such as electromagnetic interference).
Data transmission occurs between an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) equipment located in the equipment room and the Optical Network Termination (ONT) equipment in the work areas. ONTs provide connectivity from copper patch cords to any end device, such as: computers, analog or IP phones, access points, printers, IP surveillance cameras, automation systems, access control, etc.

Between OLT and ONTs is the Optical Distribution Network (ODN). In this network there are single-mode optical fibers and optical splitters.

The splitters do not require electric power supply or refrigeration, and have the function of dividing the input optical signal, coming from an OLT fiber into several outputs, allowing the data to be delivered to the various end devices connected to the ONTs. This feature of having centralized traffic switching equipment at a central point of the network eliminates bottlenecks and fits in perfectly with the traffic profile of today's local networks, especially with the needs of the hotel industry in mind.

Regarding the range, it is up to 20 km, without the need to replicate with other equipment, while a traditional copper network reaches a maximum of 100 meters. Therefore, it is ideal for large areas such as exhibition centers, tourist areas and hotel complexes, where the control and administration of the network must be concentrated in one place.

In addition, the Laserway Solution is ecological and efficient, since it allows optimizations of up to: 70% savings in cables; 35% savings on racks; 95% savings in ports; 70% space savings; 80% plastic savings and 70% energy savings. In short, it can generate savings in CAPEX of up to 50% and 70% in OPEX.
Specifically, these optical networks exponentially increase the value of the services provided by a hotel, allowing the implementation of solutions such as security through images, access control through facial recognition, personalization of the room, automated check-in / out and digital signage.

Future-proof networks

The distribution network of the Laserway solution, consisting of fiber optics, splitters and optical accessories, have a very high transmission capacity per second (Tbit / s). It is known that, for active teams, with the evolution of technologies and user demand, there will be significant increases in their data transmission rates, which would not be a problem for this technology, since the infrastructure of the solution implemented today is ready to support these rates.
The bandwidth is defined by the active equipment, so in the future it will not be necessary to change the wiring. The only thing that needs to be changed or updated is the active equipment, depending on the demands of the hotel.

Likewise, the characteristics of the Laserway solution are ecofriendly, being essential to satisfy the incentive programs to use efficient resources. This is because they contribute to the reduction of energy consumption, cooling systems and amount of petroleum-based material used in wiring, in addition to providing a longer life time than a traditional wiring solution.

Returning to what was stated at the beginning, the hotel industry must seek to satisfy increasingly demanding guests, with digital needs that demand cutting-edge solutions; And to achieve this, the necessary technology is already in hand or, rather, just a click away.
